What strength are your reeds?

They're just right! They're light, balanced. They're optimized for efficient tone production.

No doubt you've seen other reedmakers offering a hierarchy of strengths: soft reeds for beginning oboists, medium reeds for intermediate oboists, and hard reeds for advanced oboists. Don't buy into that nonsense. You're playing the oboe, not lifting weights. You don't need regular increases in resistance.

Think about the physics of tone production. An oboe reed is actually a pair of reeds. You blow between them, and they vibrate, producing sound. With a heavier reed, you have to blow harder, and you get less sound for your effort. Don't believe me? Go to the lumberyard and blow between two planks. See how much sound you get.

Playing the oboe should be easy. The greatest players are able to produce beautiful sounds effortlessly because they play on light, balanced reeds. They don't have to work hard, because they work efficiently.

Are the reeds you sell really just like the reeds you play?

Yes! Some reedmakers keep the best reeds for themselves and sell you mediocre ones. I don't work that way. If I'm not completely satisfied with a reed, I discard it. I don't sell it. If it's not good enough for me, it's not good enough for you.
